TOXIC GASES IN SEWER LINES
The gases formed in sewer lines are Hydrogen sulfide, Ammonia and Methane gases.
These gases are released into the atmosphere from the sewage system through ventilation chimneys in the collector lines.
The properties of these gases are stated below;
Hydrogen Sulfide: Hydrogen sulfide is a very toxic, colorless and flammable gas. It also has a rotten egg-like smell that can be noticed by everyone. But smell is not a reliable source of identification. When the air mixed with this gas is inhaled, the ability to smell rapidly loses this ability. For this reason, it is an unreliable method in which the gas can be easily detected due to its existing odor.
Ammonia: It is colorless, has a distinctive pungent odor, and is also poisonous and corrosive. It is a gas at room temperature and is flammable at low temperatures. It is chemically basic. It liquefies easily at normal temperature and under pressure.
Methane: Colorless, odorless, tasteless, dissolves very quickly in water, ignites with a bluish fire. Since methane gas is a heavy and dangerous atom, it harms the environment. When methane gas mixes with the air, it damages the ozone layer.
EFFECTS OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE ON HUMAN HEALTH
0.0047 PPM: Limit of detection by humans
0.002-0.2 PPM: It can be felt in the smell of rotten eggs.
2-3 PPM: Creates serious odor in the environment.
5 PPM: It is the limit value. It is necessary to get away from the environment.
10-50 PPM: Tears, headache, nausea begin.
100 PPM: Serious breathing problems begin, the trachea becomes irritated.
150-250 PPM: Causes loss of sensitivity in the sensory system.
300-500 PPM: Danger of death, respiratory system damage, death within a few minutes.
600 PPM: Breathing is prevented because the lungs are filled with gas. Death occurs.
500-1000 PPM: The central nervous system is negatively affected. Death in a few breaths.
Above 1000 PPM: Death occurs with the first breath.
It is possible to reach this concentration, especially in pits opened in sewage systems and garbage storage areas. It should be prohibited to enter sewer systems and pits dug in garbage storage areas without wearing filtering masks.
